LtE in CMO #241

From Myron E WASIUTA

@. . . . . I have enclosed my Mars observations made between 18 Feb 2001 and 01 Mar 2001.

I will be sending then twice a month from now until after opposition

@. . . . . My observations are going well, with me viewing the planet on almost every clear morning. I still have much problems with poor seeing, but as Mars gets bigger, things should improve.

You should receive a package of observations from Feb 18 through March 1 any day now. It was posted last week! I have started to send my observations every two weeks instead of monthly.

My observations on Feb 18 were made in fair seeing, and show Syrtis Major approaching sunset limb. Hellas was brilliant. At times I detected a remnant of the NPC. I did not see any clouds over Syrtis Major.

I will be posting my latest by March 16 as requested. Sincerely

@. . . . . I scanned my observations of 18 February 2001 and have enclosed them as an attachment. I hope the originals arrive soon, but as you requested them as soon as possible, I wanted to send them via email. We are supposed to have some storms move through tonight, so I do not think I will be able to observe Mars tomorrow morning

@. . . . . I just got in from observing Mars. I made three observations, at CM=27, 37, and 47 degrees. This was at 9:20 UT, 10:00 and 10:40 UT. Seeing was fair, and I noted a conspicuous bright spot just S of Mare Erythraeum. It was well seen in green light, but was also pretty prominent with the W 30 (magenta). I believe this to be frost in Argyre. It gradually became less visible as it approached the sunset limb. Chryse appeared dull. I made three sketches, and will forward them soon.

Hope your observing is going well. Sincerely,

@. . . . . I was blessed with very good seeing this morning for about an hour, and observed at 9:20 UT (CM=18) with the 32cm reflector. S. Meridiani was at sunset limb, and Argyre was noticed as bright near the south limb just to the S of M. Erythraeum. On one occasion when the seeing became exceptional, I thought I could see a tiny remnant of the NPC as a bright, discrete point to the N or M. Acidalium on the limb! My luck with good seeing came to an end at about 10:00 UT as the sky hazed over and air became turbulent.

Hope things are going well in Fukui- I guess you are seeing Tharsis now.
