Hello all,

Attached are some images of Mars taken on the 28th August in good seeing conditions.

Note striated cloud still in the NPR and further separation within the SPC.

Dear CMO,
Here is a Mars image from
08/30/2018 13:35:19 UT

Comments:
Horrible transparency this night with passing thick clouds, but seeing was
stable for decent telescope views during brief cloud gaps.
Most of the features were extremely prominent visually so the dust storm has clearly subsided.

Hi all,

In memory of Trojey.

It was a bit tough getting out into the observatory last night. A few hours earlier, we had to put down my faithful Labrador, Trojey. He regularly joined me in the observatory during my imaging sessions, and would then settle down in the study with me whilst I would do my image processing. Missing him terribly.

Plenty of detail showing in this region.

Best regards, Clyde

Excellent seeing at first, slightly degraded for the images, none the less a fine RGB. More interesting, some dark spots are rotating at the boundary of NPR as observed with the 642 filter.

Hello All,
I am dragging my feet at processing. Attached are images of Mars from 23 and 24 August.

There are some peculiar dark makings on the 450x40nm image on both nights. They do not appear to align with the albedo markings of the RGB image. They may be a result of my processing methods.

Please comment if you have any explanation.

Comments:
Seeing was much better this session and I tried to process this one more carefully than last one.
(SPC is easy to burn out & overexpose due to the angle of bright sunlight hitting it currently)
August has provided some unexpected great views in the telescope despite the low altitude!

Mars is gradually receding, as these show, and never attains more than 13º here.

Syrtis Major (on the CM August 09) is now an unfamiliar rectangular shape and many other albedo features are different. Hellas is so bright in IR, I slightly over-exposed it.

On August 20 at least one of the ‘prongs’ of Gomer is visible, and on August 25 there is something faintly visible in the large blank area of Amazonis towards the terminator, but I don’t know what it is. (Olympus should be on the CM.)

Hi all,

Image set from yesterday evening, looking down onto Olympus Mons and the Tharsis Montes, with Solis Lacus at upper left. On screen, I had the impression that conditions had deteriorated from previous evenings, so was pleased with the final results.

The light linear feature I had noted the previous evening can be seen towards the bottom left limb.

Tharsis montes are off to the left appearing as darker spots.

Hi all,

Only an IR from yesterday evening.

Other than the “new” dark feature to the west(right) of Solis Lacus, I note the light linear feature near the NP region. Possible a weather front, or Jetstream, with a significant dust component? I hope to monitor it over the next few days.

Best regards, Clyde

Ps unfortunately still plagued with an edge artefact over the SPC which I have smoothed out a bit.

Attached are some images of Mars taken on August 18th and 19th.

The dust appears to be clearing now and Syrtis Major is much more visible than the last time I imaged it a few weeks ago.

Hellas was very bright both on the images taken and when observed visually. There is an interesting bright streak and rift in the South Polar cap  that shows on the images from both nights.

Hello all,

Please excuse me if you receive this message twice; my server is having trouble sending it.

On inspecting my RGB image set from the 16th August, I noticed an error in the time-stamp of a blue image.

It reads 11:41UT but should read 10:41 UT.

Apologies for the error.

The corrected image is attached.

I have also attached an image showing data from 10:21 to 11:16 UT on the same night.

This is a composite enlarged version centered on the edge effect that I mentioned in my previous email.

Hi all,
Here are finally some images of the two ice giants taken with one of the T500 Astrosib of the observatory.
Neptune is showing again southern brightening but nothing is rotating. The seeing was superb on Uranus and the images probably reveal an intermediate belt between the equatorial belt and the polar region, the one that we had imaged at the T1M of the Pic in 2016 with Marc Delcroix and Jean-Philippe Cazard.

Hello all,

Attached are three RGB image set of Mars taken in good seeing on the 16th August 2018.

There is more data from the same night, but the time resolution is only 10min between sets, so I have picked only three to present here.

Note the small extension on the RH (morning) limb at about the 4 o'clock position in the 10:39UT image.

It appears on more than one image set (not shown here, but on other data that I have) and coincides with the position of Olympus Mons.

I will assemble a small animates GIF over the next few days to show this.

Hi all,

Finally a clear night around here with half decent seeing. The dust storm on Mars seems to finally be lifting although dark features still looked washed out a bit. Here are a couple images I got with the AP-155 and two Barlows for an f/28 set up. The first image is in RGB the second trough a deep red filter, all taken with the ASI-120 webcam.

Not great but better than none this opposition.

I'm sure this result would have been far better with lots more data. A lesson learned the hard way!
