Imaged under fair seeing, an evening cloud is noted over Elysium and bluish-white cloud over the south polar region south of Eridania-Ausonia.

Also, a probable faint equatorial cloud continuous with the evening terminator. A couple of dark streaks in the NPC.

Hi all,

I had to cut the session short this morning as cloud moved in. I only captured very limited RGB data, and seeing at that stage was soft.

Despite that, late afternoon Orographic cloud can be seen over Olympus Mons (lower left) and the other Tharsis volcanos near the terminator.

Hi all,

Image set from this morning.

Mars was already below 30deg altitude, and the session was negatively affected by light cloud and dew (we had some wonderful, welcome, rain yesterday afternoon).

Elysium is to the lower right of centre, and Olympus Mons can be seen on the terminator in the R610LP, capped by a bright cloud.

What I refer to as the giant Amazonian “?” is quite nicely seen in the R610LP. One of those features that when you have noticed it, you can’t unsee it! 😊

Dear Masami,

Attached are images of Mars from December 20, 21, 22 and 23.

I have included images using a violet filter in these sets.  It is an Edmund 50nm bandpass filter centered on 425nm.

This compares to the blue Astrodon Gen2 filter used for the blue image, which has a pass band between of about 110nm centered on 450nm. The Edmund filter is one of the filters that Christophe Pellier had looked at and it seems to do a good job of isolating clouds.

Yes! A really good demonstration of some North Polar Front phenomena.

As you know, the blue images show the clouds best, and therefore the difference between the view in blue and red shows you what are clouds and what aren't. However, even the red will not penetrate well at the North Pole, so that area looks relatively dark. The clouds are densest in the North Polar Front, which circles the North Pole near the edge of the North Polar Cap, and these clouds contribute to the brightness of the edge of the cap. The phenomena are quite like the North Polar Front on Earth.

As you know -- unless you live at the latitude of Canada -- tornado season in the US is springtime. That's when the fronts that separate from the North Polar Vortex penetrate far to the south, and have tremendous power due to the temperature gradients they cause. The same is going on right now in the Martian springtime. Your image shows the multiple foci of dense clouds along the North Polar Front, each focus being a huge storm with circular wind patterns. Some of them separate from the North Polar Zone altogether, and move southward as distinct air masses with stormy, windy edges. On Mars, these storms often stir up dust, which often appears as streaks like the ones you have documented. The streaks are along the edges of air masses.

As spring proceeds, the North Polar Vortex gradually weakens and the storminess mostly subsides. As the North Polar Cap diminishes in size, it may have some temporary dust streaks across it, because there are storms that far north as the vortex breaks up. In my opinion, a few North Polar Cap dark streaks of the past, such as the "Rima Tenuis", were dust streaks, which explains their transient character and the inconsistency of their occurrence.

Keep up the good work, Gary!

Hi all,

found some nice conditions this morning, despite the altitude of 35 deg.

The “spine” of Syrtis Major was quite noticeable.

Quite a few details starting to show across the BoreoSyrtis/Protonilus/Deuteronilus regions to the north of Arabia.

Hellas, on the upper left limb, appears relatively quiet.

The light region to the NW of Hellas (Yaonis R?) is also noted.

Sir,
Attached is a set of Mars images from December 13.

Seeing was a little above average (3/5+). Transparency was good with a clear sky.

I think that I botched the focus of the RGB a little, but the focus of the IR is good.

Dear Masami,

Attached is an image set of Mars from last night, December 12th.

They seem to show a very thin cloud band over Tempe moving south from the NPH.

At least the blue image seems to indicate this.

Looks like another week of clouds but maybe some clearing next Thursday.

Variable conditions this morning, with some nice spells.

Sinus Sabeaus and S. Meridiani are above centre with the vast expanse of Arabia centre and left.

M Acidalium to the lower right with some subtle clouds above the NPC.

Hi all,

A rather rushed session yesterday morning. I rated the conditions a bit below average.

I’ve also been assessing my filter options and used the R610 long pass as an alternative to the IR742.

The view is dominated by Mare Acidalium and Niliacus Lacus below centre.

I do note the dark loop over northern M Acidalium.

Hi all,

I was up a bit earlier to try and catch Mars at maximum altitude, and found some reasonable seeing conditions.

Aurorae Sinus is above centre, with Valles Marineris extending above it. Nilokeras is seen below centre, with Niliacus Lacus and Mare Acidalium at lower left.

Solis Lacus is at upper right and the expanse of Mare Erythraeum at upper left.

A band of clouds can be seen above the NPC.
