Hi all,

I just managed a few reasonable IR captures this morning before the conditions deteriorated badly.

Valles Marineris extends above the centre. Aurorae Sinus is upper left of centre.

Solis Lacus is at upper right, and Mare Erythraeum at upper left.

Nilokeras is below centre, with Niliacus Lacus and Mare Acidalium at lower left.

Tharsis is to the right..

Dear Masami,

Attached are images of Mars taken on October 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th that I would like to submit to CMO.

They seem to show a progression of a dust event that could be entrapped in a jet stream from the NPH.

The image from the 13th clearly shows a streak of dust that originates from Umbra / Utopia and wraps around Nodas Alcyonius.   The image from the 12th shows the start of the event coming out of Umbra.

Thanks for this image, Johan.

It appears that the NPH is thinning somewhat, consistent with late winter, as it really breaks up in another 15 degrees of Ls. As it thins, it becomes partially transparent in its northernmost part around the pole, so that its reflection is less intense there. The southern edge of the NPH stays relatively dense (brighter white) for longer. Some images might show a crisp dividing line between the dense edge area and the North Pole area, in the next few weeks.

I agree with the clouds in Arcadia and Tharsis that you identify. I can't associate them with seasonal effects, so I assume that they are just sporadic cloudy areas. Cold fronts from the North Polar Region are seen as extensions southward from the NPH, and are common, but these do not look like such extensions, IMHO.

Dear all,

An image from this morning under rather poor conditions. The NPH still looks quite complex and duskier towards the center. It is extended towards mid-latitudes near the CM, or is it a longitudinal cloud band? Morning and southern limbs arcs are visible. A faint evening cloud appears over Tharsis (it was visible on Oct 12 as well, but fainter).

Dear all,

A Mars image made this morning shows substantial activity in the bright north polar hood, with dark albedo features partly shining through. A white cloud patch extends southward towards mid-northern latitudes all the way to Phlegra in the same filters, but does not extend to the morning limb. The subtle variations in Amazonis are finely structured with Olympus Mons well delineated in 742 nm filter.
