An image of Mars from this morning showing a strong northern hood and an apparent longitudinal cloud band stretching across the disk, just south of the northernmost albedo features.

Dear all,

Here's a batch of Mars images from August and September made with a new mono camera, ASI462MM which from now on replaces the 462MC. RGB images were obtained through a set of Meade interference filters until Sept 19, which was shot with a set of ZWO "new" RGB interference filters. These have higher throughput, better color balancing and apparently better optical quality than the Meades.

The NPH was large and bright on all dates and it looks like the brightness has gradually increased. I missed the storm activity in August due to telluric clouds, but Hellas was whitish bright on the morning limb on Aug 27. Seeing has continued to be poor, unfortunately.

With best wishes,

Hi all,

Challenging conditions yesterday morning, and I only found anything near acceptable seeing well after sunrise.

In my opinion there does still appear to be some distortion of the normal albedo features, although I think that there is some dissipation. As always, open to any other views.

Hi all,

Conditions improved quite dramatically towards sunrise this morning which also happened to coincide with Chryse being central.

The RGB appears to show a broad vertical band of dust, with some concentration over Chryse, and significant dust over southern Chryse and eastern Valles Marineris. Niliacus Lacus appears to heavily obscured, and Nilokeras is also affected.

The general impression is that dust may be affecting, to a greater or lesser extent most of the eastern (left) hemisphere shown in the image.

I felt the conditions warranted me increasing the RGB slightly.

Hi all,

Given the very poor conditions this morning (the whole Southern African region is experiencing some cold weather due to a high pressure system SW of South Africa), the only reason I persevered was the dust activity that I had seen over Lunae Lacus and southern Chryse yesterday. I had to make do with IR.

The dust in southern Chryse appears to have expanded over that region, whilst being less intense, and also expanded southwards into eastern Mares Vallineris.

Nilokeras looks a bit subdued and may be affected by the dust, and Niliacus Lacus also appears to be distorted.

 Hi, all

Imaging has been a right off over the last few days with strong Jetstream conditions.

This morning the Jetstream had eased off, although conditions did deteriorate towards sunrise.

Despite that, I believe that there is some concentrated dust activity evident in the Lunae Lacus region.

From the images, it is possible that the dust may extend to the south west, through Candor towards Tithonius L.

There is a hint of brightening in southern Chryse, so it may be good to keep an eye on this region as well.

Very nice images. Thanks for sending them.

I presume you have Ebisawa's map of Mars. All the components of the question mark are labelled on it. However, I've never noticed the shape of the question mark before. You may have just now initiated a new moniker!

Hi all,

Image set from this morning. This region of the planet appears relatively clear despite the dust activity a few weeks ago.

Olympus Mons can be made out near the terminator in the earlier IR.

Clouds are visible over the North Polar region.

I’m always amused by the large “?” partially encircling the Amazonis region (best seen in the 2nd IR). Plenty of questions remain to be answered about our neighbouring planet!

Hi all,

Image set from this morning. I ran IR’s at the beginning and end of the session so have included both results.

Mare Sirenum and Mare Cimmerium sweep across the upper(southern) section of the planet, with Amazonis and Elysium(lower right) below. Propontis I is well seen in the IR at bottom centre.

Hi all,

Busy trying to catch up on a few days of processing backlog, as we had a friend staying over for the last few days.

Mare Cimmerium is above centre, with the Elysium region at lower left/centre.

With Mars slowly increasing in size, I have retained the 1.5x drizzle, but have removed the additional 1.4x resize I have been using.

Hi all,

Image set from this morning, under some reasonable seeing conditions.

Mare Cimmerium and Tritonis Sinus are above centre. Elysium is best seen in the IR at lower left.

I measure the small dark spot (inside the edge artefact) at lower right in the R image in the region of Nodus Alcyonis.

There is a again a rather indistinct indication of the Sinus Gomer extension/s.

Rather understandably, the edge artefact is exacerbated by Syrtis Major being on the right limb.
