Hi all,

Image set from this morning under some improved conditions after the recent cold spell.

Hesperia is above centre, flanked by Mare Cimmerium to its left and Mare Tyrrhenum to its right. Syrtis Major is on the right limb, and the Elysium region is coming into view at lower left.

I was able to detect at least one of the Sinus Gomer extensions.

Hi all,

Image set from this morning in far from ideal conditions. The shorter wavelengths were a challenge.

Syrtis Major extending down the right side of the planet. Mare Tyrrhenum and Syrtis Minor are above centre, with Hellas at upper right, unfortunately affected by the edge artefact.

The light Hesperia rift is upper left of centre with Mare Cimmerium coming in from the upper left limb.

Hi Clyde,

It looks like there is a thin veil of dust over the whole face of Mars.

The dust storms that have been active all of last week may be responsible for the veil of dust.

They could have uplifted a lot of dust into the West to East jet stream that carried the dust visible in your image.

That's my opinion. Thanks.

Hi all,

Its been a frustrating period recently with poor predawn seeing conditions and I was again plagued with a bad edge artefact this morning. Hoping for some better conditions so that I can recheck collimation.

Other than that, there may be some dust activity in and around Hellas, although Syrtis Major appears reasonably clear.

Hi all,

Image set from this morning with Sinus Sabeaus just above centre and Hellas at upper left. Unfortunately I had a severe cause of edge artefact which makes it difficult to comment on the limb region where the dust storm was active over the last few days.

Regarding the dust activity, it looks like Sinus Meridiani may have partially recovered although there may still be some deformation. Deucalionis Regio Regio may be showing some lightness, and there may be a hint of a light spot in the R near Moab.

The linear feature running below (north of) Sinus Sabeaus is particularly noticeable.

Hi all, here are two images of Saturn from last night in patches of reasonable seeing.

The 850nm longpass filter shows some of the structure in the Equatorial Zone more clearly than the 750. A large bright spot can be seen down near the south pole.

The 750nm image is a combination of 11 images spanning 28 minutes, the 850nm image is composed of 12 images spanning 19 minutes.

I'll be away now until November, best of luck to everyone !

All the best

Hi all,

Since the detection of the storm early on the 18th August, I have been fortunate to have ongoing interaction with Dr Bruce Cantor of Malin Space Science Systems who processes the data from the MARCI camera on board the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter(MRO).

He has very kindly given me permission to share the attached preliminary global map (credit NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/ B Cantor) from the 19th August, showing the status of the storm (left of centre) a day after detection. North is at top, with Syrtis Major to the right and a dusty Hellas at lower right.

My sincere thanks to Bruce for permission to share the map and also for the interaction.

Hi all, here are two images of Saturn from this morning in reasonable seeing.

This is my first use of an 850nm longpass filter and it seems to be doing a good job of showing some of the faint structure visible on the disk, including a prominent bright storm far south, some large wavy structure in the EZ and the very faint dark spot at latitude +44N (left of centre embedded in the brighter zone) which is the fading remnant of the 2010 great storm. Extra enhancement has been applied to the image to show these features.

All the best

I imaged well after sunrise this morning to try and allow the dust storm region to come more into view. Conditions were deteriorating and the processing was difficult. The IR685 was the last usable data.

I need to go into Windhoek tomorrow, so not sure I will get anything further on the storm, as it rotates out of view here, unless it extend rapidly to the east.

Hi Clyde. There is no objection to using the image as a context and reference for Mars observers in their imaging planning (e.g. in ALPO, ALPO Japan, PVOL, and others), but not for scientific or media use (e.g. press information) as it is a raw image and contains only a very preliminary analysis.

Great Clyde. As an additional aid, attached is our first VMC/Mars Express image of the storm, capturing probably its onset (marked as "1") and its initial expansion on 18 August at 00:23 UT.

Good luck with your observations

Dear Clyde

Well done. There are definite streaks of dust to the north, now, and also southwards across Erythraeum towards Argyre.

E.Sussenbach also imaged yesterday, and showed the western limit of the dust nicely towards Ophir-Candor.

So far the event proceeds in the same way as many regional storms in the past, and you may well find that it progresses over Margaritifer and Meridiani.

Quite often a small secondary core develops around Argyre and/or Meridiani, and, if so, you may well see it appear in the next few days.

We need images from other longitudes! It may also expand to the west with further dust cores.

Hi all,

It will become more difficult for me to follow the storm as it rotates out of view in the coming days. I did try for later captures well after sunrise, but conditions were too poor.

The view is centred on Sinus Meridiani. The two main clouds observed yesterday still seem to be active, and there may be some extension of the dust northwards.

Hoping that those in the west will be able to follow developments.

Extra sharpening has been applied to try and enhance the +44 latitude AV which is close to the central meridian at this time however it is still very faint.

20 images spanning 37 minutes were combined in WJ to get this result.

Hi all,

A double set from this morning with apparent dust activity in southern Chryse/EOS and Valles Marineris.

I had no intention of capturing Mars this morning as I had a 4hrs session in the early hours of the morning monitoring an occultation and also Saturn. But a “quick check-in” showed that something was happening and I continued for a lengthy period after sunrise.

I feel I have not done justice to the data and processing, but exhaustion was setting in!

To add a further thought or two.

At the present time, the southern Chryse/east Valles Marineris emergence site is certainly favoured at this season. This pattern of behaviour has been repeated in a number of recent Martian years. In several instances a local storm has appeared for a single day or a few days, followed by a much larger event. Recently we had a very brief event just west of Margaritifer and then some dust in southern Chryse-Xanthe. So there was a precursor this year too.

It is interesting that Hellas was previously much more active at this season in initiating dust storms of all categories, but has become less active in recent decades, reflecting gradual changes in the patterns of dust deposition and removal. It holds the record (from 1924) in being the site of the seasonally latest encircling storm. I haven’t personally adopted the recent A, B and C categories, as they seem best suited to the last few decades rather than the longer term. The long term fading of some northern albedo markings is related to the shift in preferred emergence sites of the storms, while at the same time the increased proliferation of dark markings around Chryse (notably Indus, linking Mare Acidalium to Oxia Palus) points to increased dust storm activity thereabouts. If history repeats, the current event might reach large regional status, but not encircling. But on the other hand, the 2018 encircling event should warn us against making too many predictions! I am hoping to receive plenty of observations.

Dear Clyde,

You have almost certainly detected the onset of "Dust Storm C", a seasonally recurrent regional-scale dust storm that initiates in the Ls range between 308 and 320 deg. In the previous Martian year (MY 36) it started at Ls 308 at latitude 14N and longitude 313 E (on 21 September 2022), in the same region of your images. Storm "C" expands southward, and then eastward and westward, and is expected to reach Perseverance rover. It is therefore very important to track its evolution.

Good luck!

I missed yesterday morning as I had already set up for an occultation observation in the early hours if this morning, but there was nothing obvious in my image set of 16 August.

Only the 750nm longpass filter gave usable results thanks to the presence of strong jetstream here and extra enhancement was needed during processing to highlight the faint structure visible in the

Hi all,

I have to say that I’m not 100% sure this is IR! I don’t normally like to interfere with my planetary imaging train, but had removed the filter wheel a few hours earlier to do some testing in preparation for a TNO occultation this weekend, and only realised after these Mars captures that the filter wheel was not properly reconnected. A pity, as conditions were quite nice, and with the resolution, I suspect it could have been the R filter. With the sunrise approaching, I wasn’t able to sort out the problem in time to go after a full RGB.

Hi all,

It’s been a rather barren period for me from an imaging perspective recently due to severe Jetstream, strong ground level winds (typical for this time of the year), and unwelcome smoke from extensive bushfires to the north and north east of Namibia (which actually produced some amazing and quite beautiful atmospheric effects).

Conditions were still  far from ideal this morning, and I decided to concentrate on Mars, capturing quite a bit of data which allowed me to be selective. Valles Marineris is central.
