Hi all,
here's a false-colour image of Mars from this morning in poor seeing, I decided
to use IR750 longpass for the red channel. However green and blue showed almost
no detail other than the polar cap and a vague hint of limb clouds.
The
resulting colours are not quite right but still there is a fair amount of
detail visible.
Sinus
Meridiani is visible on the right hand side of the image, with Valles Marineris
rising at left. Prominent blue cloud over the north polar
region at top.

Not the

Hi all,
here's an interesting experiment done with image data from Oct 4. I had very
good seeing that night but I've only now had the chance to come back to it and
process it the way I wanted to try out.
In
addition to normal RGB I recorded several runs using a narrow B filter
(400-450nm) which shows the faint clouds more clearly, and I've added that as
an overlay onto the RGB data to make this cloud-enhanced image.
Unfortunately
the clouds now show all as white rather than some of the limb cloud in its
natural blue colour, but otherwise this image shows more clearly the faint
clouds that were around at the time, in particular the cloud near the centre of
the image over Arsia Mons.
cheers, Anthony

re-worked - September 30th

Hi all,
Firstly my thanks to Ian Sharp and Anthony Wesley for their
comment and discussion. The original version of this image showed artifacts in
places that i suspected were not real details, and on comparison with some of
my own previous work during August and images by others it confirmed there was
an issue. Please update records with this new image.
http://www.damianpeach.com/mars2020/m2020_09_30dprp.jpg
I
suspect the problems here were a result of a few factors. Here are some details
on changes i made:
1. Smaller
align boxes in AS3 on the contrasted albedo areas mixed with larger align boxes
overall.
2. A
more careful alignment of the WJ alignment frame using the new 11.2.3 version.
I was quite surprised to see after a few attempts at slightly different angles
this can affect small scale details. I am begining to see how important it is
to get this spot on - using the moons may be the only real solution as Anthony
has mentioned.
3. I
removed a few R and G images that were not as sharp as the best data during the
capture period.
Overall
its been an interesting afternoon working on this data
experimenting and finally managed to produce a result i'm happy with.

wishes,

Beautiful drawing!
From
1965 until about 2000, 25 years, I was purely a visual observer and made
drawings of the moon and planets. Then I got into imaging and visual
observations became less and less important. Now that I have turned 70 I am
going to try to get back into drawing areas on the Moon and planets, even using
an image at the same time to get the main features accurate as Richard points
out. Here is one of my old drawings from the distant past.

Dear
Damian and Robin
Thank
you. I am glad Damian was moved to sketch the planet.... and why not? Nice work, and you did well. It is hard to put everything down on
paper when there is so much to see, and like in drawing portraits, the main
features must be accurate first, as they certainly were. (By the way, I do
portraits, and always do the eyes and nose first, because unless they are
correct, there is no point going further!)
To
Robin, this version of Antoniadi was published by him at the end of 1909 in the
BAA journal. As he later remarked, the printers made the reproduction too
hard... the original pencil sketch being softer. On my web tutorial on drawing,
still there on the BAA website front page, you can find Antoniadi's glorious
coloured version, drawn specially for Camille Flammarion for the planned but
never realised third volume of his monumental work, La Planete Mars.
Flammarion, a keen canallist, was wise to stop his chronology in 1907, because
in 1909 the canals were finally demolished, by his former Assistant!
